Best Raw Porridge

Simon and I are addicted to raw porridge. It’s an extremely satisfying way to start the day. And the chewy texture, and myriad of toppings make it interesting and worth repeating. It’s also quick to prepare.

  • Before going to bed soak 1 cup of steel cut oats and 1/4 cup – 1/2 cup almonds (in separate bowls). Note the quality of the steel cut oats does make a difference to the cereal. The Bob Mills Steel Cut Oats, though more expensive, provide the chewiest texture. Some cheaper brands can be a bit mushy, or even dirty tasting. Also note that sometimes we substitute 1/4 cup oat groats for added texture—texture buffs that we are!
  • In the morning, strain the steel cut oats and almonds.
  • Put almonds in blender with a handful of frozen cherries or other berry, fresh or frozen.
  • Combine the oats and almond mixture, and add 1 tbsp of ground flax.
  • Add 1/2 cup warm water to mixture.
  • Use agave or honey (raw is best) to sweeten, and add cinnamon to taste.
  • Top with your favorite milk and voila the best raw cereal!

Other interesting ‘porridge’ toppings include: hemp hearts, ground flax, bee pollen, granola, yogurt, raisins…
