PREGNANCY
Knowledge is empowering, making ‘Enable Your Pregnant Health’ a great place to begin the journey of pregnancy. There is a culture of fear that surrounds pregnancy, and particularly childbirth in our Western medecine. Doctors and Hollywood make childbirth out to be a medical emergency. But bringing a child into the world doesn’t have to be associated with terror. It’s a natural process that the female body understands. For centuries women have been giving birth to babies in huts and homes, and doing it successfully.
The health industry is trained to solve problems and to deal with emergencies. And to do it fast—jumping in with tools and “accessories” to speed things along. A natural birth, on the other hand, is not necessarily a timely event! It often takes hours, allowing a woman’s body to follow its natural course and birth progression. It’s the frenzied approach to birthing that can create problems that might have been avoided had a woman and her baby been given the time and space to ‘birth’ as nature intended.
Very early in my pregnancy I happened upon a Riki Lake documentary called, The Business of Being Born, which totally transformed my views about the birthing process and pregnancy in general. Simon was equally convinced. We decided in that moment to search out a midwife and do everything we could to stay out of the hospital.
The articles in this section outline things I have learned over the course of my pregnancy through my interactions with a fabulous midwife and HypnoBirthing coach, as well as through many hours of podcasts, and reading! I have tried to focus on things that might come as a surprise, or at the very least merit reinforcement.
The female body is powerful and knows how to give birth. Use these articles to Enable Your Pregnant Health!
